4 Most Common Mistakes That Security Guards Make

Reality is, no matter how well-trained or experienced a security guard is, somehow they make mistakes — and it’s pretty much unavoidable. However, as much as mistakes are unavoidable for security guards, it can also be costly. That’s why it’s best to recognize them and know what their repercussions are so you don’t have to go down the route of having to repeatedly deal with one mistake after another.

In this article, we have listed down the most common mistakes that security guards make:

1. Being Underqualified for the Job

It’s not easy to be a security guard. While some would think that all they do is stand at entrances and exits of commercial buildings, it’s more than that. The fact is, burglars or any criminals out there wouldn’t ask for permission to break in and steal — they will just do it. So if the security guard is unprepared or inexperienced, that would be a big problem.

Security guards require proper training where they are taught how to handle risky or threatening situations such as break-ins and how to respond to the situation rationally while keeping everyone safe. This also includes basic skills in self-defense, shooting, and gun handling — which are all necessary, especially for security guards assigned to banks, courthouses, hospitals, etc.

Being a security guard is not to be taken lightly because it concerns the safety of other people and the property that they are monitoring and safeguarding; that’s why being underqualified for the job won’t cut it. You have to possess the right skills and experience to be able to take on the role of a security guard. So if you plan to apply for this job, make sure to undergo all the necessary processes first.

2. Being Careless in Making Decisions During Emergencies

Emergencies and risks come with being a security guard, so it’s vital that they are able to know how to respond to these situations and make the right decisions to help minimize potential damage. Although not every occurrence is alarming and can only have mild effects, there are still some cases where it can result in life and career-threatening situations — which you wouldn’t want to happen, right?

3. Carrying Wrong Licenses and Permits

According to Republic Act 5487 Rule I Section 4: No License certificate shall be granted to any applicant for a license to operate or license to exercise security profession with the following disqualifications:

  1. having previous record of any conviction of any crime;
  2. having previous record of any conviction of any offense involving moral turpitude;
  3. having been dishonorably discharged or separated from employment or service;
  4. being a mental incompetent;
  5. being a user/addicted to the use of prohibited drugs or narcotics;
  6. being a habitual drunkard; and
  7. a dummy of a foreigner.

Keep in mind that licenses and permits are only given to security guards who have undergone and completed training, and do not possess anything that is mentioned above. Make sure to also have your security license renewed because carrying the wrong license or permit can also be a problem for you.

4. Not Getting Enough Rest

The job of a security guard is physically taxing, especially since they work on shifting schedules and stand on their feet most of the time of their duty. So if you do not get enough rest, it will eventually take a toll on your health, which will also compromise your work. As much as possible, during your break, take that time to recover your energy.
